What are Bacteria?

testing for bacteria

Bacteria typically originate in human and animal wastes and can enter a water supply from septic tank drainage, sewage, feedlot manure or direct drainage of surface runoff into wells. Bacterial contamination remains the most common water quality problem for individual wells and small community public systems. Crawlspaces with a soil floor can also pose a risk of contamination when sewage pipes experience a water loss and the area becomes exposed.

Coliforms and E. coli

Coliforms are quite common bacteria and may be found in soil, on hands, on equipment surfaces, in water and other environments. The existence of coliforms in the results of a coliform test can be indicative of unsanitary conditions.

Escherichia coli (commonly abbreviated E. coli) are a bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms. Most E. coli strains are harmless, but some can cause serious food poisoning in humans. Their ability to also survive for brief periods outside the body makes them an ideal indicator organism when testing environmental samples for fecal contamination.

Why do bacteria testing?

washing hands to clean bacteria

Aside from air, there is nothing more important for human survival than life-giving water. Simply put, we need healthy water in order to survive. It's therefore essential to test for harmful contaminants like bacteria in our drinking water.

Bacteria in contaminated water can cause many different serious health problems, whether we're drinking it or swimming in it. These include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Ear, nose and throat infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Skin diseases

Choose a reputable bacteria testing company

Unlike some harmful materials, such as toxic mold, bacteria in water simply aren't visible to the naked eye. The only way to truly feel safe about your water is to commission a professional bacteria testing company to conduct a thorough, microscopic sampling process.
